The Energy of October
The year stops adding and starts keeping.
September 27, 2026 · Jing
Maybe an old name just showed up in your inbox. Maybe a decision you made quickly over the summer is asking to be looked at again. Maybe you have a sudden urge to clean out a closet, go through your bank statements, and finally cancel the thing you’ve been paying for since spring. Or maybe you just want to stay home and make soup.
October gives us a useful invitation: go back over the ground you have already covered, and decide what deserves to stay.
On October 8, the Chinese solar calendar leaves the Fire Rooster month and enters Wu Xu, the Earth Dog month. In BaZi, the Dog is one of four storehouse branches. It is associated with the storage of Fire, and its hidden stems contain Earth, Fire, and Metal. Think of coals covered at the end of the night so they’re still warm in the morning.
That is the image I’m carrying into October. The ambition of this Fire Horse year may still be there. What would it take to make something durable from it?
Venus turns retrograde on October 3. Mercury follows on October 24, and their retrogrades overlap through November 13. In astrology, these are periods associated with reconsideration: what we value, what we agree to, and what needs another draft.
You can keep making decisions. You can also give yourself room to revise them.
Your personalized October
The vault is everyone's. What's inside it is yours.
The Earth Dog meets every chart differently. For some of you it is a wealth month, for some it brings pressure, and one Day Master spends the whole of October surrounded by their own element.
The October workbook maps this exact month onto your birth chart through BaZi, Vedic timing, and your Hellenistic chart at once, with every day of the month rated against your own pillars.

When I lay the Chinese and Western calendars beside each other, I notice a resonance.
The Chinese calendar enters a storehouse month. Venus retraces her path through Scorpio and then Libra, inviting a review of desire, intimacy, and the terms of our relationships. The month ends with a Full Moon in Taurus, bringing the question back to something tangible: what feels worth having and caring for?
These traditions approach the month differently. Together, they give me a useful way to think about taking inventory.
What have you collected this year? What does it cost to maintain? What still matters enough to carry forward?
The answers might involve money, a relationship, a project, or the version of yourself that got you through the summer. Keeping something is a commitment, too.
Venus retrograde, and the echo of 2018
Venus turns retrograde roughly every eighteen months. Her cycle also follows an eight-year rhythm, returning to nearly the same part of the zodiac. The last similar retrograde through Scorpio and Libra was in the autumn of 2018.
There is another reason that year caught my attention: 2018 was an Earth Dog year. This October carries that same pillar at the scale of a month, while Venus revisits the part of the sky she crossed that autumn.
Those are different scales of time, and they don’t promise that history will repeat. But they make the question more specific: what did you begin carrying then, and do you still want to carry it now?
Look through a few photographs or an old calendar. What were you negotiating, making, leaving, or learning to ask for? Which choices still feel like yours?
Memory can make an old situation look simpler than it was. Before reopening a door, consider what you miss: the person, the work, the feeling of possibility, or something you have stopped making room for.
A few practical ways to use that reflection:
- Review recurring payments and shared expenses. Notice what still earns its place.
- Return to a creative project you set down. Read it with the experience you have now.
- Consider a thank-you or an apology you have been meaning to offer, where contact would be welcome.
- Give a major purchase or commitment more thought if you already feel uncertain. Let your circumstances and the actual terms guide the decision.
Venus turns direct on November 13 in US time. Treat that as another point in the review, rather than a deadline by which everything must become clear.
Your personalized October
The month gives us a starting point. Your chart adds context.
The October workbook explores how the Earth Dog month meets your BaZi pillars, alongside Vedic timing and your Hellenistic chart. It includes your Day Master reading, the houses activated by the Venus and Mercury retrogrades, and a daily timing guide.

October’s two Chinese solar terms give this month a shape.
Cold Dew, 寒露, arrives on October 8. Frost’s Descent, 霜降, follows on October 23, marking the final solar term of autumn. Their names come from the seasonal observations behind the Chinese calendar; they are not weather forecasts for every place where we now read them.
There is a precise connection between the calendars here: Frost’s Descent and the beginning of tropical Scorpio both mark the Sun reaching 210 degrees of celestial longitude. They are two names for the same point along the Sun’s annual path.
I’m taking that threshold as a prompt to get practical. Mend the thing before it breaks further. Write down the recipe you keep asking someone to repeat. Finish the work that deserves a proper ending.
October 18 also brings Chongyang, the Double Ninth Festival, observed on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. Traditions include climbing to higher ground, honoring elders, and remembering ancestors, with customs varying by region and family.
It widens the question of what we keep. Some of what matters most is entrusted to us: a story, a skill, a way of welcoming people to the table.
What your body may be asking for
Autumn still belongs to Metal in Chinese medicine, so the Lung and Large Intestine continue to run the season. The Earth Dog month adds a second layer underneath: gather, store, digest. And in the eighteen days before winter begins on the Chinese calendar, we enter the Earth transition between the seasons, when the Spleen and Stomach need extra care. Your body may respond beautifully to routine this month and poorly to improvisation.
Worry is Earth’s emotion, the way grief belongs to Metal, and an Earth month can turn ordinary problem-solving into a loop that goes nowhere. If you notice yourself circling the same thought for the third time, that may be the season rather than the problem. Move your body, eat something warm, and come back to it later.
A few things that may help:
- Keep the back of your neck covered. It is the oldest piece of autumn advice in Chinese medicine, because that is where wind gets in and the Lung is most exposed to it. A scarf in October can be the difference between a cold that arrives and one that doesn’t.
- Eat cooked, warm, and naturally sweet: squash, sweet potato, millet, oats, and soups with root vegetables. Go easy on sugar, which tends to leave the Spleen feeling heavy.
- Add something moistening for the dryness. A stewed pear with a little honey in the evening does a lot for a scratchy throat.
- Keep regular mealtimes, and try not to eat your biggest meal late at night.
- Go to bed earlier than you want to. Even thirty minutes changes how the month feels by the end of it.
Sleep can get strange around Mercury’s retrograde station on October 24. If you wake at three or four in the morning with your mind racing, skip the screen and try warm water, a dark room, and a long, slow exhale.
A note for readers south of the equator: the solar terms are set by the position of the sun, so the Earth Dog month and everything in the sky below applies to you exactly as written. What changes is the weather your body is living in. October is your mid-spring, when the Liver and Gallbladder are running the show, so flip the food guidance: reach for young greens, sprouts, herbs, and asparagus, lightly cooked, with a squeeze of lemon, and go easier on heavy, rich food. Stretch along the sides of your body, from your ribs down to your hips, and get outside early while the light is still soft. Let the month guide your decisions and the season guide your plate.

Venus turns retrograde in Scorpio
October 3
Venus stations retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio and stays retrograde for the rest of the month. You may hear from people you thought you had moved on from, or notice the real cost of something you have been paying for without thinking about it. Let it be an honest inventory of what you value and who you value. Hold off on the dramatic makeover, and on the commitment you are still unsure about.
A plan meets its real constraints
October 4
The Sun in Libra opposes Saturn in Aries. This is the moment a plan meets the budget, the calendar, and the person who has to agree. Take the measurement rather than arguing with it. It will make the rest of the month easier.
Cold Dew and the Earth Dog month
October 8
The Chinese solar month changes here, not on the first. Cold Dew marks the point where autumn stops feeling crisp and starts feeling cold, and the month pillar moves from Ding You to Wu Xu. For the next four weeks, the energy supports finishing, repairing, and storing what is already underway.
New Moon in Libra
October 10
The New Moon lands at 17°22′ Libra while Libra’s ruler, Venus, is moving backward. That makes it a reset on terms you already agreed to. It is a good day for the conversation you have been putting off about what each person is actually carrying. Venus squares Mars the same day, so keep it specific and leave the long list of grievances at home.
Pluto turns direct
October 16
Pluto stations direct at 3°04′ Aquarius after five months of retrograde motion. Whatever you have been quietly reconsidering since May is ready to be acted on, and you may notice the resistance starting to ease.
Frost’s Descent and Scorpio season
October 23
The Sun reaches the point that marks both Frost’s Descent in the Chinese solar calendar and the beginning of tropical Scorpio.
Later that evening in US Eastern time, the Sun meets retrograde Venus. This conjunction is a central turning point in her retrograde cycle.
You might use it to name a value that has become clearer through the month. Understanding can arrive gradually; there is no requirement for a revelation on cue.
Mercury turns retrograde
October 24
Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio, within hours of the Sun–Venus conjunction. Venus is already moving retrograde; only Mercury changes direction here.
Both planets now invite reconsideration within the astrological framework. Give important conversations enough time. Check the terms, confirm what was agreed, and leave space for questions.
Mercury remains retrograde until November 13.
Venus steps back into Libra
October 25
Venus retreats into her own sign, and the tone softens from confrontation toward diplomacy. The questions stay the same, but they become easier to talk about. This is the best week of the month for a repair conversation.
Full Moon in Taurus
October 26
The Full Moon at 2°46′ Taurus brings something material to completion: a payment, a home, a decision about your body or your belongings. Taurus is slow and doesn’t like to be rushed, and this moon asks a simple question, which is whether what you have is enough. The Sun squares Pluto the same day, so a power dynamic may become hard to ignore. Give it a few days before you decide anything permanent.
Give your words room
October 30
Mercury squares Mars, a combination astrologers associate with impatience and sharp exchanges.
If you are revisiting an agreement, read the message once more before sending it. Ask the question you need answered. Leave enough time to hear the reply.
The almanac, and why every day has a rating
Those are the dates the sky hands everybody. There is a second timing system running underneath them, and it is much older.
For more than a thousand years, people across China have kept a calendar called the 黄历, the old almanac. It tells you which days are good for starting something that matters and which days to leave alone. Every day of the year carries its own pillar, its own element, and its own rating. This is the calendar people consulted before setting a wedding date, opening a shop, signing a contract, or moving house, the same way you would check the tide before taking a boat out.
October is a month of extremes in the almanac. There are more strong days than September had, and also four Dire days, which September had none of. The month saves its best stretch for the very end. And October 23, the loudest day in the sky, is rated Auspicious in the almanac. The two calendars read that day differently, and knowing both is exactly why I use more than one system.
The workbook breaks down all thirty-one days of October: the rating, the pillar, the element, what the day supports, and how each one meets your own four pillars, because a strong day that clashes with your chart is not a strong day for you. Monthly workbook subscribers also get the whole month as a digital almanac you can add straight to your iCal or Google Calendar, so the good days are already sitting in the calendar you actually look at.

Jia Wood
Yang WoodEarth is your wealth element, so October may bring money, opportunities, and a lot to manage all at once. The catch is that a heavy Earth month can ask more of you than you have to give. Collect what you are owed and follow up on the invoice you forgot about, but be careful about taking on a new obligation just because it pays.
Yi Wood
Yin WoodOctober favors steady income over big swings. You may be rewarded for work you did months ago, and it is a lovely time to organize your finances and tidy your agreements. There may also be some pressure underneath, from a deadline or a demanding person, so pace yourself and let the structure carry you.
Bing Fire
Yang FireThe Dog is where Fire goes to be stored, and as Yang Fire you may feel that in your energy. Your creativity is strong this month, and the things you make may land well. You may also feel more tired than usual after a long summer of burning bright. Make the work, then rest on purpose, because banking your fire is part of the job in October.
Ding Fire
Yin FireOctober makes you more expressive and a little less patient with rules that no longer make sense. That is useful for creative work and honest conversations. Give yourself a pause before you say the sharp thing to someone who holds authority over you, especially once Mercury turns retrograde on the 24th, when words can travel further than you meant them to.
Wu Earth
Yang EarthThis month is made of your own element, stem and branch. You may feel solid, supported, and very clear about what you want. The thing to watch is stubbornness, and people close to you who want a share of the same resources. Let others help, and stay open to changing your mind when the Venus retrograde brings a second look.
Ji Earth
Yin EarthFriends, peers, and collaborators feature heavily this month, and they can be a real source of support. Money can also leak through them. With Venus retrograde in Scorpio, the sign of shared resources, read the fine print on anything joint: a loan, a split, a partnership. Generosity is lovely when it is chosen.
Geng Metal
Yang MetalEarth feeds Metal, so October brings backing, learning, and help from unexpected places. You may find yourself studying something new or leaning on a mentor. Too much Earth can also bury Metal, which can feel like overthinking, or waiting for more information before you act. Take in what you need, then use it.
Xin Metal
Yin MetalAfter a September spent at full strength, October supports you. Documents, credentials, mentors, and the people who vouch for you may matter more than usual. It is a good month to lean on that support instead of proving yourself all over again. Let yourself be looked after for a few weeks.
Ren Water
Yang WaterEarth controls Water, and October may bring pressure for you: a deadline, a demanding person, or a responsibility you did not ask for. Pressure like this becomes useful when you give it a shape. Break the big thing into steps, keep your schedule steady, and avoid meeting force with force.
Gui Water
Yin WaterThe month's Earth combines with your Water, which can bring a formal commitment, a role, or a relationship that wants to become more official. That kind of offer can feel wonderful. With Venus retrograde all month, give yourself time to be sure it is what you want before you sign or say yes for the long term.
One important exception
Dragon
The Dog clashes with the Dragon. If you have Dragon anywhere in your Four Pillars, especially in your year or day branch, October may bring more movement, disruption, or friction than it does for everyone else. When two storehouses clash, what was locked away tends to get shaken loose, so an old issue may resurface at an inconvenient time.
That doesn’t make the month bad for you. It changes how you use it. Leave more room in your schedule, keep your commitments modest, and treat what surfaces as information. It doesn’t have to become a crisis. Save the big launch for November.
And for my fellow Rabbits who spent September absorbing the Rooster’s clash: the Dog combines with the Rabbit. October may feel noticeably kinder. I know I’m looking forward to it.
The question for October
October asks for a kind of work that can be easy to overlook.
Collecting what you are owed. Completing what is half done. Repairing something you want to keep. Admitting that another thing has reached its end.
You don’t need a new beginning to have evidence of progress. Sometimes the evidence is a finished draft, a clearer agreement, or one less obligation taking up space in your mind.
As the month unfolds, keep returning to the question:
What is truly mine to keep?
Your mantra for the month: finish with care, keep with intention.
