The Five Elements
A dynamic system, not a personality quiz

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Most people meet the Five Elements as personality types, but that isn’t the entire picture. The Five Elements (五行, wu xing) are forces. They interact with each other in specific patterns, and that interaction is the entire system.
The productive cycle
- Wood feeds Fire.
- Fire creates Earth (think ash).
- Earth produces Metal (minerals compress underground).
- Metal collects Water (condensation on a cold blade).
- Water nourishes Wood.
Each element generates the next. This is how energy moves forward.
The controlling cycle
- Wood penetrates Earth (roots break soil).
- Earth dams Water.
- Water extinguishes Fire.
- Fire melts Metal.
- Metal chops Wood.
This is how energy gets regulated. Each element holds another in check.
The Two Cycles, Together

Every element generates one and controls another. The whole system is in motion at once.
Why this matters for your chart
Your chart is a specific combination of all five elements, in a specific balance. The dynamic between them determines everything.
Too much Fire and not enough Water? You burn bright but burn out.
Lots of Metal but no Wood? You’re disciplined but rigid.
Heavy Earth, no Wood? Stable but stuck.
The elements you’re missing in your chart are often the ones you need most. BaZi practitioners look at what’s absent just as carefully as what’s present. Sometimes the element you have in excess is also the problem.
