August Energetic Signature
Bing Shen: the month the fire finds its edge
July 30, 2026 · Jing
If July was the month everything changed, August is the month everything gets tested.
August opens with two distinct registers running at once, and the month makes more sense once you feel both of them. The sky above is active in the way late summer tends to be: planets changing signs, a rare solar eclipse mid-month, and a slow outer-planet trine building toward an exact peak on August 31. The Chinese calendar, meanwhile, hands us the Bing Shen month, the Fire Monkey, sitting inside the Fire Horse year. Both the month stem and the year stem are 丙 Bing, the same Yang Fire, which means the pressure and brightness of this year are not softening as we move into August; they’re doubling down. The branch underneath the month is Metal, however, and Metal inside a Fire month creates a productive but demanding internal tension: the fire is forging something, and forging takes heat.
So here is the whole month, the way I actually read it: the sky, the calendar, your body, and what it all means for your Day Master.
The shift lands on August 7, when we leave Yi Wei, the Wood Goat month, and enter Bing Shen, the Fire Monkey. The same day is Liqiu, the official start of autumn in the Chinese calendar. Fire over Metal is one of the oldest images in Chinese metaphysics: the forge. Heat applied to something hard enough to hold a shape, pressure with a purpose, the process that turns raw material into a blade.
July asked what you were building. August asks what it’s made of.

Metal is the element of discernment. Where Earth settled and consolidated, Metal cuts. It separates what’s structural from what’s decorative. It is the energy of the harvest knife and the editor’s pen, and it arrives in August inside a double helping of Yang Fire, which makes the whole month feel like a forge running at full heat.
A forge isn’t a comfortable place, but it has a purpose. The pressure you feel in August is different from the scattered urgency of June or the heavy consolidation of July. It has an edge, and the edge tends to be right. The deadline that won’t move, the standard that won’t lower itself, the question that keeps coming back until you answer it honestly: that is the month doing its work. Eclipses cut the same way, usually faster than we’d choose.
So don’t fight the cutting. Work with it. Whatever survives August’s heat, you get to keep.
Water Finally Has a Source
There’s a gift hidden in this month too. For me it’s the most important thing in this post.
All year, Water has been the scarcest element in the chart: the rest, sleep, reflection, and emotional regulation that keep a Fire year sustainable instead of self-consuming. June burned it. July pressed on it. But in the cycle of the five elements, Metal is what generates Water, and the Monkey even hides a seed of Water inside its own branch. For the first time in months, the year’s most depleted resource has a supply line.
It still has to be collected. A supply line is not a full reservoir, and nothing about a double-Fire eclipse month will hand you rest unprompted. But recovery works in August in a way it hasn’t all summer, and sleep gives back more than it has since spring. Every blade that comes out of a forge gets quenched, and the quenching is what makes the steel hold.
Your Body This Month
August sits in the cusp between summer’s heat and something softer, and the Chinese medical calendar has a name for this in-between time: Late Summer, the brief fifth season governed by the Earth element and its organ pair, the Spleen and Stomach. This is a specific physiological moment when the digestive system is working harder than usual to transform everything you’ve taken in over the past two months, food, heat, stimulus, stress, into something the body can actually use. When the Spleen is taxed, you feel it as heaviness in the limbs, a foggy mind after meals, a craving for sweets that never quite resolves, and that particular kind of tired that sleep doesn’t fix.
August’s humidity is the Spleen’s enemy. Dampness accumulates in the body the same way it accumulates in the air: slowly, invisibly, until suddenly everything feels thick. The Stomach, for its part, wants warmth and rhythm. It does poorly with erratic eating, ice-cold drinks, and meals eaten standing over a sink. If you’ve been running on iced coffee and late lunches through July, your gut knows it. The seasonal instruction is rhythm: regular meals, steady sleep, fewer extremes, which sits in useful tension with the Fire-on-Fire intensity of the month. Do ambitious things, but do them from a stable center.
Lean in
The foods that support the Spleen and Stomach this month are earthy, slightly sweet, and easy to digest: kabocha squash roasted until caramelized at the edges, congee cooked long and slow until it’s almost silky, sweet potato, millet, carrots, and lightly cooked corn. The key word is cooked. Raw foods, however nutritious, take more Spleen energy to break down, and this month you want to spend that energy on transformation, not effort. Ginger in small amounts warms digestion without overheating. A spoonful of honey in warm water in the morning, toasted sesame, dates, and yellow lentils all earn their place. Orange and yellow are the seasonal colors, and there is a real reason late-summer produce defaults to those shades. Bring them onto the plate.
Ease off
Cold drinks, raw salads eaten in volume, greasy or heavily fried food, and excess dairy all generate what the tradition calls dampness, and dampness is exactly what the season is already serving. Late-night eating is particularly disruptive this month: the Stomach has a rest window around 7 to 9 p.m., and asking it to process a large meal after that disturbs sleep more than people realize. In a month where sleep is how you collect the Water the calendar is finally offering, that trade stops being worth it.
Your personalized August
Ambition, scheduled around your chart.
A steady center is half the work of August. Knowing which days can actually carry your ambition is the other half.
The workbook gives you both: every day of the month rated against your own chart, plus the personal version of this body guidance, keyed to your own elemental constitution instead of the season’s.

The single biggest event this month is the total solar eclipse on August 12, at 20.03° Leo. Solar eclipses are new moons at full power, the ordinary monthly reset amplified by a factor that astronomers can measure and traditional astrologers have spent centuries describing. This one falls in Leo, the sign of creative authority and self-expression, and it lands just days after Venus enters Libra on August 6 and Mercury moves into Leo on August 9, so the eclipse arrives inside a corridor of swift ingresses. The days surrounding August 12 carry an unusual density of configuration: Mercury opposes Pluto, trines Neptune, and sextiles Uranus all within the same twenty-four hours as the eclipse itself. The effect is less like a single note and more like a chord, complex, resonant, worth listening to carefully rather than moving through on autopilot.
The month closes with a different kind of punctuation. On August 28, a partial lunar eclipse at 4.90° Pisces opens the last stretch of the month, and on August 31, Jupiter and Saturn form an exact trine from Leo to Aries, a slow outer-planet aspect that has been building for weeks and represents one of August’s most structurally durable moments. In the sidereal sky, Jupiter is sitting in Cancer for the full month, the sign of its exaltation in the Vedic tradition, where it operates at full strength. The Jupiter–Saturn trine on the 31st therefore carries real weight: the planet of growth in one of its strongest positions, finding easy flow with the planet of structure and discipline. Whatever we have been building patiently this year, this trine is a quiet but genuine endorsement.
Those are the anchors. Every other date that matters this month is mapped, day by day, in the August workbook.

Jia Wood
Yang WoodJuly handed you ground to build on; August hands you the pruning shears. The Monkey's Metal stands in a Seven Killings relationship to Yang Wood, the pressure that tempers a tall tree rather than toppling it: deadlines, demands, standards that will not negotiate. Your output channel stays wide open under the Bing stem, so keep making, but let the month cut what it wants to cut. Hidden inside the Monkey is the first real trace of Water the year has offered you, and it arrives through discipline rather than comfort. Rest on purpose, and the pressure becomes sharpening instead of grinding.
Yi Wood
Yin WoodThe Monkey carries your Direct Officer, and Yi and Geng have a natural affinity, which means structure is courting you this month: the contract, the title, the formal yes. Meanwhile the Bing stem keeps your expression loud and visible. The move is to pair them. Say the thing, then make it official while the month favors commitment. The risk during eclipse season is talking past the moment of signature, polishing the pitch after the answer was already yes. When the door opens in August, walk through it and let the paperwork catch up.
Bing Fire
Yang FireYear, month, and Day Master are now all the same stem. Triple Bing is maximum visibility, and it also means everyone around you is burning the same fuel, so pure brightness stops being a differentiator. Your advantage sits underneath: the Monkey is your wealth element, tangible opportunity inside all that light. Claim something concrete this month rather than shining in general. One named project, one revenue line, one deliverable with your name on it. And watch your reserves, because a triple Fire stack burns fast even when it feels effortless.
Ding Fire
Yin FireBing overhead is the brighter sibling, and there is no winning a brightness contest with the sun, so don't enter one. Your opportunity is precision: the Monkey carries your Direct Wealth, the exact, countable kind of reward that goes to whoever does the close, careful work while the noise passes overhead. Candlelight wins in the details: the refinement, the relationship tended one conversation at a time, the second version that's actually right. Let the loud month be loud. What you finish quietly in August tends to get paid.
Wu Earth
Yang EarthBing feeds you from above while the Monkey receives your output below, and that combination is rarer than it sounds: a month where you are being resourced and productive at the same time. The mountain gets to make something. Put your best production into August, the work that needs both stamina and craft. The caution is the season itself, because Late Summer is Earth's own humid stretch, and heaviness creeps in through irregular meals and stagnant routine. Keep rhythm, keep moving, and this can be your most quietly effective month of the year.
Ji Earth
Yin EarthThe month resources you directly, and the Monkey turns that nourishment into voice: Hurting Officer energy, expressive, persuasive, occasionally sharper than you intend. You will be more articulate than usual in August, and eclipse season will hand you charged moments to be articulate in. Choose them. Express to build rather than to vent, especially in the days around the 12th and the 28th, when everyone's signal is amplified. Used well, this is the month your quiet competence finally gets said out loud, by you, on purpose.
Geng Metal
Yang MetalThe Monkey is your own branch, which means that for the first time in months you are standing on home ground. The Bing above is still Seven Killings, still the forge, but the relationship has changed: you are no longer the ore, you are the blade being finished. All the pressure this Fire year has applied now meets a version of you at full strength, rooted, and frankly built for exactly this. August is your month to act. Take the hard assignment, have the direct conversation, make the decisive cut. Tempered steel is meant to be used.
Xin Metal
Yin MetalBing is your Direct Officer, and Bing and Xin combine, which means authority isn't pressuring you this month so much as courting you. Recognition, promotion, the room noticing the quality of the finish: that's the available current. The complication sits inside the Monkey, where a Metal peer shares the branch, so allies and rivals will look similar in August. Share credit generously and protect your piece clearly, both at once. Polished metal exists to catch light. This is a month to be deliberately, unapologetically visible.
Ren Water
Yang WaterThe drought breaks for you first. The Monkey is Yang Water's growth palace, and its Metal feeds you directly, which means the year's scarcest element, the one you are made of, finally has a supply line. Meanwhile the doubled Fire is your wealth: an entire landscape of opportunity that has been running hot all year, waiting for someone with reserves to work it. In August, you have them. This is the strongest turn of the year for you. Move on the thing you've been too depleted to move on, and keep refilling as you go.
Gui Water
Yin WaterAugust feeds you and pays you at once: the Monkey's Metal is your Direct Resource and the Bing stem is your Direct Wealth. After months of being the most stretched Day Master in the calendar, support actually arrives. The order matters, though. Refill first, then spend. Take the rest, the mentorship, the backing, and let your reserves come up before you chase the tangible reward, because the month is still hot and loud and you are still yin water. Quiet moves, made from a replenished place, produce real gains this month.

The days below are everyone's. Yours are inside.
What follows is the collective calendar, the same sky and the same almanac everyone shares. But a strong day that clashes with your chart is not a strong day for you.
The workbook rates every one of August’s thirty-one days against your own chart: your power days, your clash days, and the dates where the sky and the almanac quietly disagree.

Where July was generous, August is choosy. The almanac gives the whole month only six favorable days, and it is strict about which is which. The workbook maps every single day of August, its rating, its pillar, its element, and what it’s actually good for. Here are three days that give you the shape of the month, plus the one honest fork.
A day to hold
August 7 · Dire day
August 7 is Liqiu, the first day of autumn on the Chinese calendar and the opening of the Monkey month, and the almanac marks it Dire. There is something fitting in that: the season turns, and the calendar asks you to let it turn without pushing anything through the door. Rest, finish what is already ending, clear the deck. It isn’t the month’s only Dire day, either. The others are in the workbook, including one that lands on a date you’d never guess.
The last clean runway
August 10 · Auspicious day
The last well-supported day before the eclipse corridor opens on the 12th. If something is ready now and doesn’t need maximum drama, this is an honest, sturdy day to begin on, with the whole runway still quiet.
The eclipse decision
August 12 · Excellent day, and a total eclipse
This is the month’s honest fork, because my two systems point in opposite directions on the same date. The Chinese almanac rates August 12 one of the best days of the entire month by its own ancient arithmetic. Western astrology sees a total solar eclipse, the most potent and least predictable sky of the season, when what begins tends to grow in directions you didn’t chart. So here is the guidance, plainly: if you want maximum power and can live with surprise, the 12th is the strongest day of the month, and what you start on it will not be small. If you want clean, steady, no-crosscurrents timing, there is a quieter Excellent day sitting almost right beside it, no eclipse attached. Workbook readers know exactly which one.
The late window
August 21 · Excellent day
The strongest clean day in the back half of the month, ideal for anything that wasn’t ready before the eclipse. Point this day at the work: the launch, the signing, the venture.
Everything else in August is ordinary ground, and ordinary is where most of the tempering happens. The rest is in the workbook: the other Excellent day, the remaining Auspicious ones, the Dire days hiding in plain sight, and the two dates where the sky and the almanac disagree again. All thirty-one days, rated and read against your own chart.
The Practice of August
June gave you momentum. July gave it a foundation. August tests the whole structure, and the testing is the gift.
The temptation this month is to defend everything: every project, every commitment, every version of yourself that got you here. But the forge doesn’t work that way, and neither do eclipses. Some of what you’re carrying is structural and some of it is not, and August has an unsentimental way of telling the difference. So let it cut. What survives the heat is what you actually get to keep, and it comes out harder, sharper, and more truly yours.
And collect the Water while the month is finally making it. Sleep like it’s part of the work, because this month it is. Every blade that comes out of a forge gets quenched, and the quenching is what makes the steel hold.
The sky will offer the timing. The month itself asks for something simpler: discernment, honesty about what’s load-bearing, and the willingness to let go of what was only ever propping up the past.
That’s the real work of August.
